PFL 2020: Azkals d. Mendiola 1991, 2-0

CARMONA, CAVITE – The Azkals Development Team finally lived up to their promise by trouncing Mendiola 1991, 2-0, on the third day of action at the 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL) brought to you by Qatar Airways from the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) National Training Center Tuesday morning.  Late second half goals from Jarvey Gayoso and Mathew Custodio sealed the deal as they also snapped their two-game losing skid.

Gayoso headed in the Azkals’ first goal of the season via a header in the 73rd minute.  The once solid Mendiola defense then began crumble.

A free kick from Gayoso found Yrick Gallantes but he missed his close range attempt.  However, goalkeeper Kenry Balobo mishandled the ball with Custodio tapping it in to double their score in the 81st minute.

The first half ended scoreless but not before a tense ending that saw Louie Joshua Polinag getting caught pushing Mar Vincent Diano from behind.  Balobo denied Marvin Angeles’ penalty kick but the Azkals caught the loose ball only to hit the left post.

The win also kept the Azkals’ title hopes alive after conceding similar 1-0 losses to powerhouses United City and Kaya Iloilo.  Their next match will be on Friday against Maharlika Manila at 430 PM while Mendiola continues the search for their first win versus Kaya at 9:00 AM.
