CITY OF San Jose del Monte – Home team First City Providential College recovered from an opening day loss to stun visitor AMA University, 59-58, in continuing action from the Ninth Universities, Colleges and Schools Athletic Association (UCSAA) Preseason Tournament Thursday at the school campus. The Royal Eagles’ win completed a wild day that also saw WCC-Aerotech College upset Saint Dominic Savio College in the opening game, 48-46, thus placing all four teams even with similar 1-1 win-loss cards.
Despite arriving with only seven players, the Titans gave the Royal Eagles a good challenge. Nursing a 45-43 lead entering the final period, FCPC needed big shots from rookies John Alfred Pio Roda, John Matthew Bravo and Edjon Diaz and veteran Don Harley Allas to hold off the Titans’ rallies.
Meanwhile, burly Johndel Kevin Joves literally took over in the fourth period as he drained six crucial free throws and hit the insurance field goal to carve the breakthrough win for the Caloocan City-based Skyhawks. WCC-Aerotech was crushed by AMA in the tournament opener, 47-81.
The first round of the double classification phase will be played Saturday (June 1) at AMA-Quezon City. FCPC meets WCC-Aerotech in the 11:00 AM curtain-raiser followed by the faceoff between SDSC and home side AMA at 12:30 PM.
