NCRAA26: CEU d. Pasig Catholic, 81-80 OT

#NCRAA26     PASIG CITY – The meeting of two undefeated teams lived up to the hype as visitors Centro Escolar University needed overtime to subdue home squad Pasig Catholic College, 81-80, in the featured game from the 26th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) Wednesday at the Saint Joseph Gymnasium.  Regulation play ended at 75-75 and Rich Guinitaran kept enough strength for the final push as he scored all of the Scorpions’ six points in the extra period for their third win in as many outings.

Guinitaran’s final field goal pegged the count at 81-78 with 55 seconds to play.  Jan Kyle Salen threatened with two free throws at the 44-second mark, 80-81, but that was the last to be heard from the Crusaders.

Isaac Paulo Llorca launched a missed triple forcing the Crusaders to foul Christian Uri who then bungled both his free throws with 10 seconds to go.  The ensuing rebound scramble saw the ball go out of bounds in the home team’s favor but they continued to miss their hurried attempts in the final nine seconds.

Guinitaran led all scorers with 31 points and eight rebounds and four steals.  Joshua Abastillas was next with 19 points and nine rebounds while Tyron Chan missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds plus five assists.

The Crusaders were crippled after scorer Algie Chavenia was slapped a disqualifying foul in the first half and top passer Gio Calacalsada followed suit with his fifth foul early in the fourth period.  Salen tried to lift the team by scoring seven straight points and then assisted Aaron de Guzman for the equalizer with 1:02 to go in regulation to set the stage for the overtime.

Salen paced Pasig Catholic with 15 points, 13 of which came in the fourth period and overtime.  Before fouling out, Calacalsada amassed 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists while Marc Lester Tamayo and de Guzman chipped in 13 apiece and Tamayo grabbing 16 rebounds.
