QUEZON CITY – Top seed La Consolacion College and defending champion PATTS College of Aeronautics moved one step closer to a collision for the 10th Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA) after besting their respective semifinal opponents in Game One of their best of three series Thursday at the Henry Noble Gym inside Trinity University of Asia. LCC defeated Philippine Women’s University, 73-69, while PATTS survived the hostile crowd to thwart host Trinity, 71-64.
The fourth seed PWU Patriots were bracing for the major upset of the Blue Royals but big fourth period baskets from Nino Tamayo, Paul Harley Dagunan and Thurlough Grealy saved the day. Tamayo hit back to back baskets followed by consecutive triples from Dagunan and Grealy to hold off the Patriots’ last gasp anchored on Gilbert Salting and Ivan Andaya.
Dagunan led the Blue Royals with 19 points followed by Tamayo with 18. Grealy had six of his 11 points in the fourth period.
In the other semifinal, the Seahorses outscored the Stallions in the fourth period, 26-14, to rebound from a five-point deficit after the third, 45-50. JR Bautista and Mark Jayson Morada spearheaded the Seahorses’ rally with Morada finally giving them the lead via a three-point play, 56-55, and there was no stopping PATTS as they stretched it further to 10 with a minute remaining, 70-60.
Bautista made seven of his team-high 14 points in the fourth. Morada and Norman Torreno backed him up with 13 points each while big man Leonard Mengoy added 10.
