UCSAA8 Preview: ICCT Blue Dragons

REPEATING THEIR Cinderella Act from last season will be a tall order for ICCT Colleges as they get set to defend their Seniors Basketball crown when the Eighth Universities, Colleges and Schools Athletic Association (UCSAA) opens shop this August 31 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.  Last year, the Blue Dragons shocked the league by winning the title in their very first appearance but now Coach Arvin Guinto will only have eight returnees in their 18-player roster.

ICCT’s veteran crew consists of reigning UCSAA Most Valuable Player Ernest Oduca and fellow Mythical Five member Shawn Michael Icaro, JP Bantique, Anthony Buban, Ricky Clavecilla, Jerome Morante, John Miko Trinidad and Vhince Viernes.  They will be joined by promising rookies Claud de Leon, Joshua Delgado, Romeo Descarga III, Ariel Fajardo, John Latido, Mark Justin Leal, Adrian Malong, Fherwin Millares, Christian Mark Tuazon and John Paul Zapanta.

“Despite the many restrictions and challenges regarding recruitment, I am satisfied with the team we have now,” said Coach Guinto.  “I appeal to the ICCT community to support their Blue Dragons and we will do our best to make them proud again.”

The Blue Dragons will match skills anew with last season’s runner-up Pasig Catholic College, host Saint Dominic Savio College and Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong.  The competition is expected to toughen with Juniors Division champion First City Providential College finally fielding a Senior team plus expansion teams College of Saint John Paul II and Colegio de Santa Teresa de Avila.

Just like last year, ICCT will not put up an entry in Juniors Basketball.  However, the Cainta, Rizal-based school is expected to join Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Chess where their student athletes performed well last season.
