SAN JUAN City – Javi Gomez de Liano tipped in the offensive rebound with 18 seconds left to give the University of the Philippines the win over San Beda University, 56-54, in the main game Friday at the 12th FilOil Flying Preseason Cup from the FilOil Flying V Centre. The Fighting Maroons ended their campaign at 6-3 and will now wait for the results of the next games to see if they will advance to the playoffs.
In a mad sequence, Gomez de Liano came from the weak side to follow up the miss of Paul Desiderio and give the lead to UP, 55-54. San Beda had a chance but Robert Bolick issued an errant pass to Jose Presbitero returning possession to the Maroons with three seconds on the clock.
Not yet in the penalty, the Red Lions were forced to give up a pair of fouls to send Diego Dario to the line with the guard missing the first but making his second for the final tally with 0.4 of a second to go. After a timeout, San Beda failed to execute as Bolick’s off-balanced attempt missed.
“When we face a champion team coming from a training camp abroad, their confidence and conditioning is high,” observed Coach Bo Perasol. “That was my challenge to the team.”
The Red Lions just arrived from Florida in the United States for training and were leading entering the final five minutes, 52-44. The Maroons then went on a 9-0 run sparked by guards Dario and Jun Manzo and Bright Akhuetie giving them the lead but Donald Tankoua quickly restored the upper hand at the 44-second mark, 54-53.
Akhuetie and Gomez de Liano paced the Maroons with 10 points each. Akhuetie also hauled 17 rebounds.
Javee Mocon topped the Red Lions with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists as they levelled their win-loss card at 2-2. Tankoua was next with 11 points and seven rebounds.
