FilOil: UST d. Jose Rizal, 98-88

SAN JUAN City – University of Santo Tomas claimed its first win at the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup by blasting Jose Rizal University, 98-88, in a meeting of winless teams Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  The Growling Tigers rose to 1-2 while the Heavy Bombers remained in the Group B cellar at 0-4.

Kenneth Zamora, a transferee from Arellano University, knocked in a big triple with 43 seconds left to give UST ample breathing space with 43 seconds to play, 96-85.  Darius Estrella then countered with a free throw off a Marvin Lee technical foul for faking a foul but a failed ensuing offensive led to a foul on Renzo Subido who calmly made both his gift shots to assure the victory.

“When we came aboard in January, we started from zero,” said Coach Aldin Ayo.  “Now, the players are absorbing the system but we really lacked players because they are either attending their classes or are injured.”

The lack of manpower showed as Coach Ayo made do with a 10-man rotation but saw seven of them submit 10 points or more.  Subido led the way with 24 points on five triples plus five assists while Zamora, Enrique Caunan and Nate Cosejo chipped in 13 points each with Caunan grabbing 12 rebounds.

Estrella paced the Heavy Bombers with 22 points.  He was supported by Jarvy Ramos with 12 point and four rebounds.
