SAN JUAN City – National University claimed a morale-boosting win over Gilas Pilipinas, 86-81, in Tuesday’s main game of the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre. The Bulldogs leaned on big games by John Lloyd Clemente, John Galinato, Enzo Joson and Shaun Ildefonso for only their second win in five games.
“I’m fortunate to coach these young men,” said Coach Jamike Jarin. “They will only get better and better and we hope to fast-track their maturity in time for the UAAP.”
True to their coach’s word, the quartet starred in a crucial 13-2 run that gave the Bulldogs the lead and an 85-79 advantage with 15 ticks on the clock thanks to Clemente’s basket. It was another frustrating loss for Gilas which squandered a 47-35 advantage by allowing the Bulldogs close in by scoring the last eight points of the first half, 43-47.
Clemente and Galinato already chalked up double figures by then with Clemente finishing the game with 23 points and seven rebounds while Galinato had 20 points. Joson added 14 points and seven assists while Ildefonso had 13 points.
Kobe Paras survived a bad fall in the third to return in the fourth as he tried to keep Gilas afloat with 10 of his 23 points. Abu Tratter also had a good game with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks but it was not enough to avoid falling to 1-5.
Nazareth School of National University set the stage for a double celebration in the morning as they thumped Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in the Juniors Division, 92-61.
