FilOil: Saint Benilde d. Lyceum, 92-68

SAN JUAN City – College of Saint Benilde banked on a strong start to tame Lyceum of the Philippines University, 92-68, in continuing action from the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre Friday.  This marks the second win in a row for the Blazers who turned again to their high-octane offense.

After Lyceum opened the scoring with a triple, the Blazers went on a 12-0 and never looked back. “We want to be a fast-paced team and also a structured team but if we can make a shot within three seconds, why not?” said winning coach Tyrone Tang, whose charges took their first game against Jose Rizal University, 104-83, last April 29.

Clement Leutcheu had a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Blazers.  Yankie Haruna was next with 14 points via efficient six of seven shooting from the field.

Mer Jesper Ayaay made his FilOil debut with 14 points off the bench followed by Ralph Tansingco with 12 points and six rebounds.  CJ Perez also debuted  with eight points, four rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes of play.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University capitalized on a fourth period meltdown by Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu to come out the winner the lone Juniors Division game, 84-60.  The Baby Tamaraws were leading by only three after three periods, 49-46, but Royce Alforque, Kyle Bautista and Ron Tolentino presided over their major run to turn the game into a laugher.

Alforque, who used to play for the Magis Eagles’ CeSAFI rival University of the Visayas, scored 12 of his 17 points in the fourth period compared to the 14 total of the opposition.  Bautista supported him with seven of his 14 points in the fourth.

Eric Tuadles and Joshua Barrientos paced the Magis Eagles with 14 points each.  Ateneo fell to 1-1 and must now win its remaining assignment against Nazareth School of National University on May 15 to have a shot at the semifinals next month.
