FilOil: Letran d. Lyceum, 78-74

SAN JUAN City – Colegio de San Juan de Letran displayed its versatility in sending Lyceum of the Philippines University crashing to another defeat, 78-74, in continuing action from the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  Major adjustments in the second half did the trick for the Knights in upping their record to 2-1 while the Pirates dropped to 1-3.

Larry Muyang kept Letran within striking distance as he tallied a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds by halftime but Lyceum clung to a two-point lead, 38-36.  “We did not play our game, we played their game,” lamented Coach Jeff Napa.

Bong Quinto then woke up from his poor first half and unloaded 13 points in the third canto as Letran seized control entering the fourth, 62-59.  Christian Fajarito then took over from Muyang at the post and responded by banging in eight of his 10 points and John Paul Calvo scored their final two field goals to stymie Lyceum’s attempts to rally.

“I like our deep rotation this year thanks to all the recruits that came in,” added Coach Napa.  “We can play either big or small and the opponent will have to adjust to us.”

Despite being hounded by foul trouble, Muyang still paced the Knights with 20 points and 14 rebounds.  Quinto finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Fajarito also had a double-double with 10 rebounds as Letran won the battle of rebounds, 62-38.

Yancy Remulla topped the Pirates with 18 points.  Rhanzelle Yong was next with 15 markers.

Meanwhile, reigning CeSAFI Juniors champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu made a rousing debut with a come from behind win over the Letran Squires, 75-70.  Jay Cutamora tied the game at 68-68 at the 1:09 mark followed by a Letran five-second inbound violation that led to back to back baskets by Joseph Fuentebella for a 72-68 lead for the Magis Eagles with 38 ticks on the clock.

Andrei Romenez threatened via two free throws, 70-72 and both sides swapped turnovers to keep the count unchanged with 16 seconds to play.  Rey Lewis and Eric Tuadles then proceeded to ice the game from the free throw line.

Fuentebella led the Magis Eagles with 20 points while Lewis and Cutamora had 14 points each with Lewis grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double.  Andrey Guarino topped the Squires with 16 points and nine rebounds followed by Charles Saure with 10 points and five rebounds.
