FilOil: UP-Diliman d. National, 73-57

SAN JUAN City – University of the Philippines finally barged into the win column by blasting National University, 73-57, in the main game Friday at the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  A torrid third period explosion was all the Maroons needed to turn the close game wide open and end their three-game losing streak.

The Maroons held on to a shaky three-point lead at the half, 29-23, until Juan Gomez de Liano, Paul Desiderio, Gelo Vito and Jarrell Lim scored five points each as they took turns in stretching their lead entering the final period, 53-37.  By then, the rout was on as UP highlighted its romp with an alley-oop dunk by rookie David Murrell.

“We love this win because we won against a strong team like NU,” said winning coach Bo Perasol.  “We just need more time together and we must maximize what we have right now.”

Desiderio led all scorers with 14 points plus five rebounds and three assists.  Bright Akhuetie was next with 10 points and nine rebounds while Javi Gomez de Liano also had 10 points.

Coach Perasol also noted that having Desiderio, Juan Gomez de Liano and Will Gozum in the national pool has really done wonders.  “It is a privilege to play for the country and we will not hinder that,” he added.

John Lloyd Clemente and John Galinato paced the Bulldogs with 11 markers each.  Issa Gaye added eight but it was not enough to prevent them from absorbing their third straight defeat.

It was not all sadness for National as their Nazareth School Bullpups opened hostilities in the Juniors Division by thumping Far Eastern University in the day’s first game, 67-54.  National junior players Gerry Abadiano and Carl Tamayo led the way for the winners with 19 and 11 points respectively.
