FilOil: San Beda d. Gilas Pilipinas, 91-70

    SAN JUAN City – Defending champion San Beda University returned to its winning ways by venting its ire on Gilas Pilipinas, 91-70, in the main game Sunday at the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  It was total redemption for the Red Lions who dropped their previous outing against Ateneo de Manila University, 68-69.

Starter Jeramer Cabanag scored seven points in seven minutes to fuel the Red Lions’ initial breakaway.  Substitutes Donald Tankoua, AC Soberano and Calvin Oftana then banged in more hits as San Beda led at the half, 45-30, and were never threatened.

Filipino-Canadian recruit James Canlas submitted a breakout performance with 13 of his 16 points coming in the second half via four out of six three-point shooting.  Cabanag played eight more minutes and scored eight to finish with 15 and six rebounds while Tankoua had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Nazareth School of National University’s Carl Tamayo topped the Nationals with 13 points and six rebounds.  Kobe Paras and J-Jay Alejandro were next with 11 markers each as they dropped further down the rankings with their third consecutive defeat.
