SAN JUAN City – Mapua University held tough down the stretch to repel Emilio Aguinaldo College, 77-74, for its second win in as many games at the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Cedric Pelayo, Laurenz Paul Victoria and Noah Lugo hit the big shots as the Cardinals weathered the storm.
The Generals went on a 9-0 tear to cut the gap, 67-71. Penaflor quickly scored to ease the pressure as the Mapua fouled CJ Cadua for a free throw split, 68-73.
It was the turn of Lugo as he found the basket for two more points and more breathing room at the 1:22 mark, 75-68. Still, EAC refused to quit with Vincent Robin connecting on a triple, 71-75.
Victoria went on to hit what could be the game-decider against a wall of defenders, 77-71, and 46 seconds to play. Mapua’s defense then held form as they held on to claim the victory.
Christian Bunag came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria was next with 14 points and six rebounds.
