SAN JUAN City – Ateneo de Manila University unleashed its might in the second half to blow away University of the Philippines, 100-72, at the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Sizzling three-point shooting and unforgiving defense was the key as the Blue Eagles soared to their third straight win and the solo leadership of Group A.
Jolo Mendoza banked in a triple at the halftime buzzer to give Ateneo a 44-38. That shot provided enough spark as the Blue Eagles began to dismantle the Maroons in the second half.
So unforgiving where the Blue Eagles that they outscored the Maroons, 31-14, in the fourth period. Overall, they made 12 triples while grabbing more rebounds, 40-32, and forcing 18 turnovers on their opponents.
Anton Asistio led Ateneo’s three-point shooting spree with four en route to 14 points. Raffy Verano was next with 11 while Matthew Nieto and Adrian Wong hit double figures with 10.
Bright Akhuetie paced the Maroons with 20 points and six rebounds. Paul Desiderio followed with 14 points but the duo lacked support from their teammates as they absorbed their third straight setback.
