FilOil: San Beda d. National, 71-61

SAN JUAN City – San Beda University began the formal defense of their title at the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup with a resounding 71-61 defeat of National University Sunday evening at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  Tight defense in the clutch allowed the Red Lions to score the game’s final 10 points while pinning the Bulldogs at the 61-point mark.

San Beda’s closing onslaught was sparked by back-to-back circus shots from Franz Abuda and JB Bahio and the floodgates burst open from there. “We have been working on our individual defense and it worked when we stopped their scoring at 61 points”, said Coach Boyet Fernandez.

Mocon knocked in eight of his team-best 12 points in the second half.  Bahio keyed their good start with eight of his 10 coming in the first that saw then erect a 37-23 cushion.

“I also credit Coach Jamike for speeding up today’s game for it really suits us,” added Coach Fernandez.  “Nine other NCAA teams this season will be running teams so we have to prepare for that.”

Rookies kept the Bulldogs afloat with John Lloyd Clemente scoring 13 and Dave Ildefonso adding 10.  Issa Gaye followed with nine points and seven rebounds.
