FilOil: Letran d. UST, 95-90

SAN JUAN City – Colegio de San Juan de Letran banked on their veteran smarts down the stretch to tame a vastly improved University of Santo Tomas, 95-90, at the 12th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The game remained close until UST forward Zachary Huang picked up his fifth and final foul with over eight minutes left.  That was the cue for the Knights to stage their breakaway as the Growling Tigers opted to engage them in a shootout.

Bong Quinto powered Letran with 22 points and nine assists.  Larry Muyang tallied a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds while Jerrick Balanza likewise had 17 points.

“Our deep frontline is our advantage, they now can rest and recover well” said Letran coach Jeff Napa.  “They can now play and be comfortable in their positions.”

Huang fouled out with 15 points and six rebounds.  Reggie Boy Basibas was the high man for UST with 16 markers.

“I like how we executed our offense today but our defense needs a lot of work,” observed UST coach Aldin Ayo.  “Right now, I hope we can be complete as some of the players recover from injuries or finish their school requirements.”
