NCRAA25: Olivarez d. De Ocampo, 89-86 OT

#NCRAA25     PARANAQUE CITY – Pruvil “Noy” Bermudes hit a very long triple with 20 seconds left in overtime to give Olivarez College the very important win in Game One of the 25th Sta. Lucia Land National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) Seniors Basketball Finals over De Ocampo Memorial College, 89-86, at their own home court Friday morning.  Dahrrel Caranguian tried to salvage the win for the visitors but his triple at the buzzer was nullified for lack of time.

The host Sea Lions squandered a 65-47 advantage in the third period and allowed the Cobras to rally, eventually pulling ahead on an Igi Boy Sabasaje triple at the 33-second mark of regulation, 79-78.  Peter Marc Manalang then padded their lead with a free throw but Sabasaje fouled Archie Sunga who sank both his charities to set the stage for the extra five minutes.

In the overtime, Caranguian gave De Ocampo its last taste of the lead with 1:39 to play, 86-84.  Joshua Almajeda quickly answered to tie the score for the last time and the defense did its work to set the stage for Bermudes’ heroics.

“I was confident Noy’s shot will go in because we ran the same play against New Era in the quarterfinals,” said Jayboy Solis who was adjudged Best Player with 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five blocks.  “I will double my effort so we can finish the series in Game Two.”

Solis got a lot of help from Vinny Begaso who bumped and clawed his way inside towards 21 points and eight rebounds.  Archie Sunga also contributed big in the second half for 14 point and six rebounds.

Caranguian led all scorers with 25 points through 10 out of 24 shooting from the field.  Jhonard Clarito bucked a four-stitch cut on the forehead sustained in their last game by added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Game Two is scheduled for next Tuesday with the venue to be announced soon.  Before that, losing semifinalists AMA University and Philippine Merchant Marine School will tangle for Third Place.
