NCRAA25: PMMS d. PATTS, 79-78

#NCRAA25     PARANAQUE CITY – Martin Manatad may have scored only two points but his basket with 20 seconds left was enough to lift Philippine Merchant Marine School over PATTS College of Aeronautics, 79-78, at the 25th Sta. Lucia Land National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) Playoffs Friday at Olivarez College.  Manatad’s field goal completed the Mariners’ dizzying rally from 20 points down at the start of the final period, 47-67, and barge into the semfinals.

The win came at a cost as Mariners Aaron Morante and Joshua Carvajal were thrown out together with John Reed for their involvement in an altercation in front of PATTS bench with 4:41 left and the Seahorses clinging on to the lead, 72-66.  The long lull helped the Mariners as they finally grabbed the lead at the 33-second mark via a stab from veteran Richmond Gilbero, 77-76.

After a PATTS timeout, Jestoni Loyola quickly restored the upper hand to PATTS, 78-77, prompting Coach Aldrin Morante to call his timeout and map out the winning play.

Gilbero topped the Mariners with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.  Bryan Hilario battled personal foul trouble and got disqualified with over five minutes remaining in the final canto but still finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Norman Torreno carried the load for the Seahorses with four triples en route to 17 points and six rebounds.  Team captain Joshua Diaz was next with 14 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Mariners will play the winner of the final quarterfinal fixture pitting Olivarez College versus New Era University.  The semfinals will be played this Tuesday but PMMS will be without the services of ejected pair of Morante and Carvajal.
