PARANAQUE CITY – Streaking De Ocampo Memorial College claimed the first semifinal berth in the 25th Sta. Lucia Land National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) by upsetting higher-ranked Saint Francis of Assisi College, 78-70, at Olivarez College Friday morning. Atoning for a scoreless first half, Dahrrel Caranguian struck hardest in the fourth period as the Cobras tallied their seventh straight win in the tournament after dropping their first two including an 85-96 drubbing at the hands of the same Doves last December 12.
Caranguian hit back to back triples, the first to tie the score and the second to push the Cobras ahead for good with 3:55 to play, 71-68. A steal in the ensuing play led to a layup by Nino Macasling and there was no denying the Cobras from thereon, 73-68.
Michael Cenita then hit two free throws for the Doves but Peter Marc Manalang quickly answered with a basket of his own to maintain the margin, 75-70. Caranguian fittingly put an exclamation point with one more booming triple at the nine-second mark for the final tally.
Jhonard Clarito, who did not play in the first meeting, made his presence felt as he led the Cobras with 23 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Caranguian finished with 17 points on top of five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
JM Cruz paced the Doves with 16 points and 15 rebounds but the effort went to naught. Michael Cenita was next with 13 points and three assists.
The Doves now await the winner of the next game between AMA University and De La Salle University-Dasmarinas. Just like the previous rounds, the semifinals set for Tuesday will be a straight knockout affair.
