NCAA: San Beda d. Mapua, 66-55

NCAA Season 93     SAN JUAN City – Defending champion San Beda College marched to its fifth straight win in continuing action from the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball Tournament by blasting an undermanned Mapua University, 66-55, at the FilOil Flying V Centre Friday (August 11).  The Red Lions (6-1) remained a game behind undefeated league leader Lyceum of the Philippines University (7-0).

Donald Tankoua, Javee Mocon and Davon Potts set the foundation for the blowout by combining for 15 points as San Beda took the first period and never looked back, 23-6.  Potts and Mocon continued their good play in to the second half and it provided enough cushion to hold off a late Mapua rally led by big man Christian Bunag and shooter Almel Orquina.

Tankoua topped the Red Lions with 11 points and 18 rebounds.  Mocon was next with 10 points and six rebounds.

Bunag led the Cardinals with 10 of his 20 points in the fourth period and matched Tankoua with 18 rebounds.  Orquina also sizzled in the fourth with eight of his 11 points but the effort was not enough to prevent them from falling to 1-6.

Earlier in Juniors Division play, the Red Cubs shocked the defending champion Malayan High School of Science, 87-81, in a rematch of last year’s championship series.  Strong second half efforts from Evan Nelle, Ain Obenza and Peter Alfaro secured the victory.

Nelle was all over the court with 27 points and six assists.  Alfaro and Obenza supported him with 15 and 12 markers respectively.

Starters Clint Escamis and Will Gozum led the Red Robins with 19 points each as they absorbed their first loss of the season after winning six straight.  Jeff Sapinit added 18 points off the bench.
