D-League: Flying V d. Batangas, 116-101

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Flying V completed a 10-game sweep of the elimination round of the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup by toying with Batangas, 116-101, at the Ynares Sports Arena Tuesday (August 1).  The expansion club continued to raise eyebrows with their performance as team leader Jeron Teng notched his third triple double in as many games.

Teng was all over the court with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the Thunder went virtually unchallenged throughout.  The Batanguenos scored the first basket of the game but Flying V retaliated with nine unanswered points for a 9-2 lead which ballooned to 36-24 at period’s end to signal the beginning of the blowout.

The likes of Teng, Thomas Torres and Eric Salamat all reached twin figures by halftime.  Torres eventually topped the Thunder with 26 points on perfect six of six from three-point range while Salamat popped in 22.

“I’m happy that we swept the eliminations but I will be happier if we win it all,” said Coach Eric Altamirano.  “We still have to work on our defense because we allowed to many penetrations in the first half.”

New recruit Robby Celiz paced Batangas with 15 points off the bench.  Cedric de Joya was next with 14 while CJ Isit added 13.

The loss by Batangas means that Centro Escolar University will enjoy the twice to beat advantage in their quarterfinal series starting Thursday (August 3) at the same venue.  The other pairing will pit third seed Tanduay Rhum against sixth seed Marinerong Pilipino.

Coach Altamirano hopes to keep the team sharp in their upcoming break as they await their semifinal opponent in either Batangas or CEU.  “Both teams are strong especially Batangas with all their new players,” observed Coach Altamirano.
