PASIG CITY – Tanduay Rhum needed a strong start to outlast Racal Motors, 81-72, in continuing action from the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Thursday (July 27). Despite having no bearing in the final standings, both sides still gave it their all.
The Rhum Masters scored the first seven points of the game and that was basically it as timely baskets prevented Racal’s repeated attempts to threaten. When Tanduay built its biggest lead of the game, 49-34, Racal countered with 12 unanswered markers but the Rhum Masters held form to hang on to the driver’s seat at halftime, 49-44. Paul Varilla and Renz Palma then took turns at making sure the victory would not slip away by putting in eight markers each in the second half.
Von Tambeling typified Tanduay’s strong start with eight of his game-high 13 points in the first period. James Martinez came off the bench to add eight of his 12 points in the second period.
Allan Mangahas led the way for Racal with 14 points but was held scoreless in the fourth period. Mac Tallo was the only other Racal player in double figures with 10 but was likewise held scoreless in the fourth period.
