D-League: Marinerong Pilipino d. Zark’s Burger, 119-74

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Marinerong Pilipino entered into its first winning streak in franchise history by razing also-ran Zark’s Burger, 119-74, at the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Tuesday (July 18).  More importantly, the win kept the Skippers’ playoff hopes alive with their third win in seven outings.

The best that the Jawbreakers could offer was score five points in a row for their only lead of the game, 5-4, and it was all Skippers from thereon.  Team captain Mark Isip led Marinero’s breakaway with help from John Lopez and substitute Dave Moralde to take the first period by a mile, 27-15, and everyone fielded by Coach Koy Banal did their share in stretching the lead beyond recall.

Paolo Javelona turned it up in the second half with nine of his 17 points to emerge as the Skippers’ leading scorer.  Lopez followed with 15 and Isip, Moralde and Ralph Salcedo added 12 each as their 119-point total was a team-high after averaging a tournament-worst 71.5 points in their first six games.

Robby Celiz continued to pace Zark’s with 16 points while James Mangahas was next with 12.  New signee Mark Cardona debuted with 11 points, same total as RR de Leon.

“I strongly believe we still have a chance for the playoffs,” declared Isip.  “It starts in our practices where we push each other to do well and in today’s game everyone did their contribution to the win.”
