D-League: Tanduay Rhum d. Batangas, 111-86

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Tanduay Rhum caught Batangas flatfooted to run away with the 111-86 victory at the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Thursday (July 13) at the Ynares Sports Arena.  The Rhum Makers thus snatched solo third place with their fifth win in seven games and continued their hunt for an outright semifinal berth.

The wards of Coach Lawrence Chongson returned from their halftime huddle with renewed energy as they scored the first 24 points of the third period to blow the game wide apart, 75-39, behind the timely hits of Von Tambeling, Paul Varilla and Lester Alvarez who combined for 28 of their 35 points. Batangas never recovered but Tanduay maintained the killer instinct and further stretched the lead to as much as 37 markers, 81-44.

“I did not expect that we would win by a big margin,” said Tambeling.  “I admit I was struggling in the last games so Coach Lawrence talked to me and he gave me the license to shoot in order to get back my confidence.”

Tambeling led all scorers with 28 points, five rebounds and three steals.  Alvarez supported him with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists.

“The road to the championship passes through Flying V and Cignal,” added Coach Chongson. “We have to sweep our remaining games so we can control our own destiny.”

Joseph Sedurifa sizzled for 17 points in the first half but turned cold in the second to finish with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.  James Forrester added 14 markers in his farewell appearance before returning to the PBA’s GlobalPort Batang Pier.
