PASIG CITY – The losing skid is over for Marinerong Pilipino at the 2017 PBA D-League Fondation Cup. The Skippers rallied from 10 points down in the fourth period to subdue Racal Motors, 72-71, Thursday (July 13) at the Ynares Sports Arena thanks to the go-ahead stab from Achie Inigo at the 44-second mark.
Gwayne Capacio’s triple with three minutes to play gave Racal a 71-61 lead before disaster struck. The Skippers unloaded nine unanswered points capped by a Samuel Marata triple to threaten, 70-71.
Capacio, who was playing well all game, then committed a costly travelling violation that returned possession to Marinero and setting up Inigo’s big basket. After swapping botched plays, Racal had a big chance to reverse the outcome but Jamil Ortuoste missed his sideline triple and John Ray Alabanza collared the defensive rebound preserve the win.
“We thought we were good but we were humbled during our losing streak,” admitted Coach Koy Banal. “We at the coaching staff just kept on assuring the players that we still believe in them despite our struggles and they finally responded today.”
Game hero Inigo led the way with 10 of his 14 points in the fourth period rally on top of seven assists and five rebounds. Team captain Mark Isip followed with 12 points as the Skippers improved to 2-4 and remained in contention for a playoff berth.
Capacio paced Racal with 13 points. The tandem of Janus Lozada and Marlon Gomez supported him with 10 points each.
