NCAA93: Malayan d. Arellano, 78-75 (Jrs)

NCAA Season 93     MANILA – Defending Juniors Division champion Malayan High School of Science started its title-retention bid in the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with a tough 78-75 decision against Arellano University Sunday (July 9) at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Gym.  The Red Robins had to rally from behind in the fourth period in an otherwise close contest.

Jeff Sapinit led Malayan’s charge with 15 points but it was the play of big boys Warren Bonifacio and Will Gozum that spelled the difference down the stretch.  Bonifacio finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds while Gozum had 12 points and 20 rebounds as they outfought Arellano center Aaron Fermin.

Fermin paced the Braves with 19 points and 19 rebounds but his side suddenly lost steam.  Kobe Camacho also had 19 points in the losing effort.

Period Scores: 14-14, 33-33, 58-56, 78-75.
