NCAA93: San Beda d. San Sebastian, 76-67

Colorful rites usher in the 93rd NCAA.

NCAA Season 93     PASAY CITY – San Beda College began the defense of its National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Seniors Basketball title on the right track  by waylaying 93rd season host San Sebastian College, 76-72, in the league’s opening day Saturday (July 8) at the Mall of Asia Arena.  The Red Lions held the Stags without a field goal in a critical five-minute span in the fourth period to hack out the tough victory.

San Beda went to work after Stags captain Michael Calisaan tied the game for the last time on two free throws with 5:39 to play, 62-62.  The Red Lions then rattled off nine unanswered points behind Clint Doliguez, JB Bahio and Robert Bolick for an imposing 71-62 margin entering the final two minutes.

Lorenzo Navarro tried to resuscitate the Stags’ bid with two free throws but it was quickly quashed by a Davon Potts triple with a minute remaining and San Beda’s biggest lead, 74-64.  Navarro hit a triple but time was not on their side as the champions clung on to the win.

Javee Mocon powered San Beda’s cause with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Bolick also had 15 points despite being burdened by foul trouble.

Calisaan paced the Stags with 13 points and five rebounds.  Navarro was next with 12 points, seven coming in the fourth.

“We stepped up our defense in the fourth and I also give credit to Clint Doliguez for providing the energy,” said Coach Boyet Fernandez.  “We cannot give up 25 turnovers next time though but we’ll take this win.”

San Beda’s next game will be this Friday (July 14) against Lyceum of the Philippines University at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  San Sebastian will visit Arellano University on July 13 as part of the NCAA On Tour.
