D-League: Cignal HD d. Batangas, 70-66

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Cignal HD scored a very important victory in its penultimate assignment against Batangas, 70-66, to move up to second spot in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Thursday (July 6). The Hawkeyes improved to 7-2 with their fifth win in a row and stayed in serious contention for one of two outright semifinal slots.

Harold Arboleda hit the go-ahead triple for Cignal with 50 seconds left, 68-66.  In the ensuing possession, new recruit James Forrester turned the ball over resulting in a breakaway drive for Christopher Sumalinog and more cushion and the final count at the 24-second mark, 70-66.

“The play really wasn’t for me, I saw the shot clock winding down so I decided to take the shot,” said Arboleda, who finished the game with eight points.  Before Arboleda’s heroics, Forrester almost became the hero as he put Batangas on top for the last time with 1:15 to go, 66-65.

Jason Perkins powered Cignal with 15 points and five rebounds despite going scoreless in the final period.  Sumalinog also had 15 points including the insurance basket in the fourth period.

CJ Isit returned to active duty after a brief vacation in Canada to lead Batangas with 12 of his 14 points in the first half to go with four rebounds and four assists.  No other Batangas player scored in twin digits.

The Hawkeyes’ next and final assignment will be against Centro Escolar University 19 days from now on July 25.  Coach Fernandez plans to give his players more rest while staying sharp by playing practice games.
