D-League: Cignal HD d. Wang’s, 94-69

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Cignal HD stretched its winning run to four games after they blasted Wang’s Basketball, 94-69, in continuing action from the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Thursday (June 29).  The Hawkeyes thus became the first team to reach six wins and place one foot in the quarterfinal round this coming August.

Cignal limited Wang’s to a solitary free throw through the first five minutes of the game to erect a 14-1 lead.  Wang’s never recovered from there with the likes of Christopher Sumalinog, Jason Perkins, Raymar Jose and Pamboy Raymundo taking turns at puncturing the basket for an imposing 52-27 halftime count.

“We focused on defending their scorers (Robert) Herndon and (Michael) Juico,” said Coach Boyet Fernandez.  “Our plan worked and we built a good buffer but we still relaxed in the fourth so we have to avoid that.”

The Hawkeyes’ combined defense indeed limited the prolific duo with Herndon limited to a lone triple in the first half and Juico squeezing in two free throws.  Cignal was able to lead by as high as 34 markers just before the third period buzzer, 74-40.

Perkins led the Hawkeyes with 12 points in the first period en route to a total of 24 points and five rebounds.  Raymundo followed with 18 rebounds and four assists.

With their usual gunners struggling, John Ambulodto paced Wang’s with 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.  Ryan Arambulo was next with 14 points as Wang’s saw their two-game winning streak come to a halt and level their record to 3-3.
