SAN JUAN City – San Beda College maintained its perfect record in the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup after taking care of University of the Philippines, 65-56, in quarterfinal action Wednesday (June 21) at the FilOil Flying V Centre. This marks the Red Lions’ ninth win dating back to the elimination round.
All San Beda needed was a crippling 13-0 run to close out the third period, 45-33, keeping the Maroons scoreless for the final six and a half minutes. Jose Mari Presbitero started the onslaught with a triple and Robert Bolick went to work in eight more paints to pin down the opposition.
Presbitero was not done as he nailed a triple to begin fourth period hostilities and erect their biggest lead, 48-33. However, Ibrahim Quattara and Diego Dario tried to bring UP closer successfully reducing the deficit to only five with 42 ticks to go, 56-61.
Time though was not on UP’s side as Arnaud Noah and Presbitero preserved the win from the free throw line while the Maroons fired blanks. “We are running around like a headless chicken in the first half, good for us that the team began to call out plays and execute better in the second half,” explained Coach Boyet Fernandez.
Bolick finished with a grand total of 17 points on top of eight assists and two blocks. Presbitero supported him with 14 points and three rebounds.
Quattara managed to tally a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds in the first half and eventually ended up with 22 points and 25 rebounds. Coach Fernandez ordered the quicker Noah to match up with Quattara despite the decent play of Toba Eugene who led the Red Lions in the first half with six points.
San Beda will face Jose Rizal University in the semifinals this Friday (June 23). Meanwhile, Lyceum of the Philippines University will await for their opponent upon completion of the remaining quarterfinal game between Far Eastern University and defending champion De La Salle University.
