SAN JUAN City – Lyceum of the Philippines University became the first team to march into the semifinals of the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup by whipping San Sebastian College, 86-71, at start of the playoffs Wednesday (June 21) at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Ironically, it took the monster efforts of a pair of former SSC players to key the victory for the Pirates.
One-time Stag Spencer Pretta came off the bench to punch in three triples and his shooting infected the rest of his teammates with the likes of big men Ralph Tansingco and Mike Harry Nzeusseu hitting from the outside. By then, the Pirates transformed the 16-16 standoff after the first period into a 43-35 bubble by halftime.
Lyceum was not yet done as Pretta continued his hot shooting and another ex-Stag CJ Perez scored from all angles including a triple followed by a steal and dunk for a 63-47 count towards the end of the third period. By then, it was coasting along for the Pirates as San Sebastian’s usual contributors like Michael Calisaan, Jerrick Fabian and Ryan Costelo turned silent allowing the lead to stretch to its biggest, 82-59, with just under five minutes to play.
Pretta finished with five triples for a total of 17 points to go with three assists. Perez followed with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
“We don’t mind any color or drama, we just honor the game by playing our best,” said Coach Topex Robinson. “I am myself a Stag and I will always be a Stag but my loyalty now is with Lyceum and the task at hand.”
Alfen Gayosa paced San Sebastian with 14 points. Michael Are and John Calma were next with nine points each.
The Pirates will next meet the winner of the match between Group B winner Far Eastern University and defending champion De La Salle University. The other half of the quarterfinal pairings consists of Adamson University versus Jose Rizal University and undefeated San Beda College against University of the Philippines.
