PASIG CITY – John Ambulodto scored underneath the basket at the buzzer to give the tough win to Wang’s Basketball over Gamboa Coffee Mix, 88-86, in a 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup thriller Tuesday afternoon (June 20) at the Ynares Sports Arena. Left unmarked by the defense, Ambulodto received a perfect drop pass from driving teammate Timothy Habelito for the winning points.
“I was thinking that if I had the ball, I would go hard to the basket and go for the win,” explained Ambulodto, a product of Saint Clare College of Caloocan. “I thought Tim would take the shot but I asked him to give me the ball because I was open and good thing the shot went in.”
The buzzer-beater capped a madcap final minute of play that saw both sides miss crucial free throws that could have decided the outcome earlier. Gameboa’s new recruit Michael Parala scored to tie the game with eight second remaining, 86-86, and with no more timeouts to call Wang’s was forced to quickly scramble down the floor leading to Ambulodto’s heroics.
“In the end, the breaks of the game where in our favor and the team showed again the never say die attitude,” said winning coach Pablo Lucas as they snapped their two-game losin skid and improve to 2-2. “As long as everyone knows and does their role whether it be to score or play defense, we will be fine.”
Robert Herndon powered Wang’s with 27 points and five rebounds. Fellow starter Michael Juico chipped in 22 points and four assists.
Gamboa playing coach Leo Avenido tallied a conference-best 38 points to go with nine rebounds but the effort went to no avail as the Coffee Lovers sank to their third straight loss. Ken Acibar followed with 15 points and eight rebounds while Parala added 11 points and six rebounds.
