D-League: Tanduay d. Marinerong Pilipino, 76-74

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Tanduay Rhum survived a thriller against Marinerong Pilipino, 76-74, in continuing action from the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Monday (June 19).  The Rhum Masters are now on a two-game roll after dropping their first assignment.

John Lopez received a perfect assist for an unmolested under-goal stab with three seconds to go and tie the game for the last time at 74-74, forcing Coach Lawrence Chongson to call a timeout.  Suddenly, Lopez turned from hero to zero as he gave up a foul away from the ball with Lester Alvarez calmly sinking the free throw plus retaining possession for Tanduay.

Having no more option, Lopez fouled Jaymo Eguilos who made his first but missed the second.  The Skippers grabbed the defensive rebound and tried one last desperation heave from half-court that went nowhere.

“We have to address our consistency,” said Coach Chongson.  “Our team is working on our chemistry and the players are learning their roles but I will still take this win.”

Alvarez powered the Rhum Masters’ charge with 12 of his 15 points in the opening period as Tanduay raced to a 23-17.  Eguilos followed with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Achie Inigo was the high man for the Skippers with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He was supported by Julian Sargent with 10 points as they dropped to 1-2.
