SAN JUAN City – San Beda College swept the elimination round of the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup thanks to a hard-earned 82-67 victory over a tough Ateneo de Manila University Friday evening (June 16) at the FilOil Flying V Centre. This marks the Red Lions’ eighth straight victory and assures them of the top seeding in Group A while eliminating the Blue Eagles from the playoffs.
Defending champion De La Salle University, 93-77 winners over Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the day’s earlier contest, also had a reason to celebrate as the Red Lions handed them a free pass into the playoffs as the fourth and final seed from their group. DLSU finished with a 5-3 win-loss card, a full game ahead of 4-4 Blue Eagles.
San Beda looked to clear matters early as Robert Bolick spearheaded their attack for a 44-25 edge at halftime. The Red Lions continued their rampage into the third period and erected their biggest lead, 53-31, on a triple from former Ateneo player Clint Doliguez.
The Blue Eagles though would not fold easily as they slowly fought back to come within their closest at seven markers, 62-69, with 3:30 remaining in the fourth period on Anton Asistio’s third triple of the game. Bolick then recovered his shooting form as he dropped eight points in their 13-5 closing run.
“I’m happy for our 8-0 record but it’s not yet over,” said Coach Boyet Fernandez. “We have to continue improving especially on defense.”
Bolick finished with a grand total of 27 points, five rebounds and four assists in a one-man show of force. Javee Mocon and AC Soberano followed with nine points each.
Raffy Verano paced the Blue Eagles with 12 points and four rebounds. Asistio scored all of his nine points from the three-point line.
Up next for San Beda in the knockout quarterfinals on Wednesday (June 21) is University of the Philippines. Also advancing to the quarterfinals from Group A are Lyceum of the Philippines University and Jose Rizal University while Group B has sent Far Eastern University, Adamson University and San Sebastian College.
