D-League: Flying V d. Wang’s, 107-96

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Flying V assumed the solo leadership of the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup by blasting Wang’s Basketball, 107-96, in continuing action Tuesday (June 13) at the Ynares Sports Arena.  The Thunder overcame a poor first half with improved defense in the second to earn the victory.

Gab Banal was instrumental in Flying V’s second half recovery as he scattered 11 points in the third period while putting the defensive handcuffs on Robbie Herndon.  Herndon was unconscious in the first half amassing 20 markers to push Wang’s ahead, 59-55, but his shooting suddenly vanished.

The Thunder then went for the kill in the final period with Aris Dionisio working on both offense and defense, eventually erecting their biggest lead of 105-92 on a Thomas Torres free throw with 1:18 on the clock.  “I admit we played bad defense in the first half but the second unit gave us a big lift,” said Coach Eric Altamirano.

Flying V’s chances hit a snag in the second period after Jan Colina was thrown out for physically contacting a referee.  Several plays later, Eric Salamat injured his ankle and had to leave but the likes of Dionisio, Hans Thiele and Jerrick Canada stepped up to complement the plays of Banal and Jeron Teng.

Banal was all over the court for 29 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.  Despite being hounded by foul trouble, Teng added 20 points and six assists.

After his first half explosion, Herndon was heard again late in the fourth period as he added four more points to up his total to 24 to lead Wang’s.  Christian de Chavez followed with 13 points on three triples off the bench.

It will be a long break for the 3-0 Thunder as their next game will be on June 26 against unpredictable Marinerong Pilipino.  Coach Altamirano hopes the team stays sharp during the break while Teng travels to France to represent the Philippines in the FIBA World 3X3 Championship together with Kiefer Ravena, Kobe Paras and JR Quinahan.
