FilOil: Ateneo d. Jose Rizal, 59-51

2017 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup     SAN JUAN City – Less than 24 hours after defeating archrival De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University returned to the FilOil Flying V Centre to score a come from behind 59-51 triumph over Jose Rizal University in the main game of the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Monday night (June 12).  The back-to-back victories improved the Blue Eagles’ chances of advancing to the quarterfinals with two game days to go.

For the second game in a row, Anton Asistio topped Ateneo in scoring with 17 points on three triples.  Raffy Verano came off the bench to add eight points on perfect four of four shooting.

Darius Estrella paced the Heavy Bombers with 14 points and six rebounds.  He was supported by Ervin Grospe with 10 and Bernabe Teodoro with 10 but it JRU still absorbed their second loss of the tournament.

The Blue Eagles improved to 4-2 for a half-game lead over defending champion DLSU (4-3) for the last playoff berth in Group A.  The Green Archers’ destiny is not fully in their hands as they hope Ateneo, JRU (5-2) and undefeated San Beda College (6-0) lose their remaining games to have a chance at formally defending their title won last year via a 10-game sweep.
