FilOil: June 11 Juniors Roundup

2017 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup     SAN JUAN City – Colegio de San Juan de Letran registered the big upset over defending champion San Beda College-Rizal, 81-78, to complicate the playoff picture in the Juniors Division of the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Sunday (June 11) at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  Later, University of Santo Tomas stayed clean with a 75-70 spanking of University of the Philippines Integrated School.

The Squires definitely played the spoilers role to the hilt as crucial free throws down the stretch by Niel Tolentino, Kobe Monje and Russel Aniban keyed the win, their first after three straight defeats.  John Valdez led Letran with nine of 26 points in the fourth period on top 12 rebounds followed by Miguel Labrador with 10 points.

All is not lost for the now 2-2 Red Cubs as they can still make the playoffs if they beat Nazareth School of National University in their final game on June 16.  Ateneo de Manila University is already assured of a semifinal berth in Group A with a perfect 4-0 record with one more game against Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite also on the 16th.

Meanwhile, Kobe Palencia hit a dagger triple with 38 seconds left to give the Tiger Cubs an unassailable 74-66 advantage over the Junior Maroons. Paolo Hernandez paced UST with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Palencia finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Tigers Cubs can avoid the complications of a three-way tie as long as they sweep the eliminations in their last assignment versus Malayan High School of Science tomorrow (June 12).  A win by the Red Robins will create a logjam with Far Eastern University and UST at 4-1.
