D-League: Batangas d. Wang’s, 81-79

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Pint-sized Cedric de Joya shot over a wall of defenders at the buzzer to lift Batangas over Wang’s Basketball, 81-79, in another thriller from the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Tuesday morning (June 6). The Batanguenos thus raced to their second win in a row and a share of the early lead with idle Flying V.

Timothy Habelito and Robert Herndon capped a mad Wang’s rally with back-to-back triples with Herndon hitting with four seconds to go to tie that game at 79-79.  With no more timeouts left, Batangas executed a quick inbound with the ball finding its way to de Joya who looped his shot for the winner.

“We left it all to chance when Cedric fired his shot,” said Coach Gonzales of his prized discovery from Nasugbu.  “The good thing about him is that he is already learning basketball and I thank management for investing in him.”

Joseph Sedurifa set the stage for Batangas’ win by hitting back-to-back triples to close out the first half in their favor, 41-39.  Wang’s started strong by building a 34-19 lead but it did not last as Sedurifa, Earvin Mendoza and de Joya starred in their 22-5 counter spanning the final five minutes of the first half.

Batangas then poised to turn the game into a blowout as John Ragasa joined Sedurifa in a strong third period that gave them a comfortable 63-52 cushion entering the final canto.  Wang’s started the fourth period with a 17-4 run to give them back the lead, 68-67, but this was quickly neutralized by crucial baskets by Sedurifa, Jesse Saitanan and Jerald Bautista.

Sedurifa finished with 25 points, 13 of which came in the second period, on top of five rebounds and three assists.  De Joya added 14 markers, including the game-winner, plus three assists.

Herndon topped Wang’s with 27 points and 14 rebounds as they fell to an even 1-1 win-loss card.  Michole Sorela supported him with 13 points and eight rebounds.
