D-League: Cignal HD d. Zark’s Burger, 107-69

2017 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Cignal HD continued their rise in the standings by bulldozing past Zark’s Burger, 107-69, in the featured contest of the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Monday (June 5).  This marks back-to-back wins for the Hawkeyes after dropping their opening day assignment against Flying V.

Seeing that his starting five was not playing up to par despite leading all the way, Coach Boyet Fernandez turned to his reserves and they responded very well with Andreas Cahilig, Byron Villarias and Jason Perkins combining well to give the Hawkeyes the first period, 27-15. The sudden benching of the starters seemed to work wonders for Cignal as they began to contribute upon their reinsertion later in the game with Raymar Jose notching eight points and 13 rebounds by halftime and Cignal comfortably ahead, 49-28.

So unforgiving were the Hawkeyes that they managed to stretch the margin to as high as 43 markers in the fourth canto, 94-51.  The only red mark on Cignal’s otherwise imposing performance was the ejection of starting center Mark Bringas after he incurred two technical fouls in the second period.

“I’m just hoping we stay healthy during this long stretch of games ahead,” said Coach Fernandez. “I admit we had a bad start today but I am glad that our system was back in the second half.”

Cahilig topped the Hawkeyes with 15 points followed by Jose with a total of 12 points and 17 rebounds. Also hitting hard for Cignal were Perkins and Potts with 10 markers each.

Robby Celiz once more paced Zark’s with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists.  RR de Leon and Jerome Ferrer followed with 12 points apiece but these were made mostly in the second half with the outcome long settled.
