SAN JUAN City – Adamson University handed University of the Philippines its first loss at the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup to the tune of 58-50 Sunday afternoon (May 28) at the FilOil Flying V Centre. It was a defensive game throughout with the Falcons making key stops down the stretch.
Paul Desiderio tied the count for the last time on a drive with 4:31 to play, 46-46. From there, the defense limited the Maroons to only a free each from Jun Manzo and Desiderio while rattling off 10 points led by Papi Sarr for a secure 58-48 margin at the 17-second mark.
“This is a sign that we are improving but we are still a work in progress,” said Coach Franz Pumaren. “For now, anyone on the team can be the go to guy.”
Robbie Manalang and Sean Mangati spearheaded the Falcons’ charge with 11 markers each. The duo also combined for nine rebounds and six assists as the squad is assured of a spot in next month’s quarterfinals with their sixth win in seven outings.
Desiderio led UP with 17 points and nine rebounds while Manzo had 13 points as they saw they winning streak end at three games. A crucial statistic was that the Maroons could only churn out two assists compared to Adamson’s 11.
