PASIG CITY – Jeron Teng completed a three-point play with four seconds remaining to lift newcomer Flying V Thunder over Cignal HD, 86-84, on opening day of the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Thursday (May 25). Defense then sealed the deal as the Hawkeyes could not convert in their final possession.
Earlier, Raymar Jose gave the Hawkeyes a solid 79-73 lead entering the final two minutes. Suddenly, Teng hit a triple followed by back-to-back baskets by Thomas Torres and Teng to give the Thunder the upper hand for the first time, 80-79, and 1:45 remaining.
Gab Banal then added another triple for more breathing room, 83-79, but Cignal quickly retaliated with a Jason Perkins field goal and a triple by Davon Potts at the seven-second mark to give back the lead to Cignal and prompting Coach Eric Altamirano to sue for time. That allowed the Thunder to pave the way for Teng’s heroics as he barrelled through the defense for the go-ahead basket while fishing a foul from Jose.
“I told the players to stick to the system and their sheer will to win carried them today,” said Coach Altamirano. “We played good defense especially in the final three possessions.”
Teng was on fire all game with 33 points. He was ably supported by Torres with 16 points and eight rebounds and Banal with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Perkins paced the Hawkeyes with 22 points and four rebounds. Jose had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
In the recent Aspirants Cup, Cignal lost their opening game against an AMA Online Education squad led by Teng who unloaded 16 points. The Hawkeyes eventually regrouped and went on to take home the championship last April, the seventh for Coach Boyet Fernandez after six with the NLEX Road Warriors.
