SAN JUAN City – PBA D-League expansion team Flying V Thunder continued their preparations for the coming Foundation Cup by beating Far Eastern University, 78-68, in another exhibition game Sunday (May 7) at the FilOil Flying V Arena. This time, the bench stepped up to make up for the team’s sudden lack of manpower.
“We played better defensively this time,” said Coach Eric Altamirano. “The reserves also showed that they can play.”
The Thunder played without starters Jeron Teng and Thomas Torres who had to attend to a previous commitment. Without them, Coach Altamirano managed to extract good games from Gab Banal, Eric Salamat, Jarelan Tampus and Aris Dionsio.
Salamat and Banal combined in a critical 11-0 run early in the fourth that upped their lead, 65-56. Tampus and Dionisio would also bang in crucial baskets, including a three-point play by Dionisio that erected their biggest lead of the game with 2:39 to play, 75-63.
Salamat led the way for Flying V with 22 points, three assists and three steals while Banal added 17 points and four rebounds. Tampus was next with 11 points while Dionisio had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds on top of three blocks.
Ron Dennison paced the Tamaraws with 23 points and five rebounds. Jeff Ramirez was next with 10 points all made in the first half.
