FilOil: Ateneo d. Letran, 78-76

2017 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup     SAN JUAN City – After losing back-to-back games, Ateneo de Manila University is now on a roll with their second win in a row at the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup.  The Blue Eagles survived an intense fourth period to edge Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 78-76, in continuing action Sunday (May 7) at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

Tyler Tio hit a big triple with 17 seconds left to put ADMU on top, 77-76.  The Knights had a chance but they threw the ball away, forcing Rey Nambatac to foul Anton Asistio who then converted his first but missed his second free throw and the rebound going to Letran and 12 seconds on the clock.

Still, the Knights failed to capitalize as Bong Quinto missed a baseline layup allowing the Eagles to escape with the victory.  “Results don’t matter at this time because we are still building a team,” said Coach Tab Baldwin who also cited Letran for doing a good job in putting them in bad situations.

Tio was key all game with 17 points and three rebounds.  Thirdy Ravena supported him with 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Nambatac led the Knights with 25 points and five rebounds.  Bong Quinto and Jerrick Balanza chipped in nine markers each.

So intense was the game that both squads combined for 52 fouls.  ADMU nearly shot themselves in the foot by making only five of their 13 free throw attempt in the fourth.

Earlier in the day, the Blue Eaglets got their Juniors Division campaign started on a high note by downing no less than defending champion San Beda College-Rizal, 73-66.  SJ Belangel, Jason Credo and Dave Ildefonso combined for 26 of ADMU’s 30 points in the fourth period as they overturned the Red Cubs’ 51-43 advantage after three periods.
