FilOil: National d. EAC, 87-85

2017 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup     SAN JUAN City – National University came from behind to stun Emilio Aguinado College, 87-85, in a meeting of debuting sides at the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Friday (May 5) at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  J-Jay Alejandro delivered the game-winning shot as he was about to fall on the floor with 16 seconds to play as he shattered the 85-85 deadlock.

The Bulldogs’ defense went to work as they denied the Generals’ three point blank attempts to either tie or go ahead with the buzzer sounding. It was a tough win for NU as they overturned a 15-point deficit after the first period, 14-29.

“With the way we played, we did not deserve to win,” said Coach Jamike Jarin in his first major public appearance as Bulldogs head coach.  “EAC just got tired so we were able to get the win.”

Game hero Alejandro and Matt Salem keyed NU’s second half surge.  Alejandro finished with 25 points on five of eight shooting from three-point distance on top of nine rebounds and four assists while Salem added 20 points and seven rebounds.

Francis Munsayac led EAC’s early charge with 12 points in the first half but was limiting to only two points in the second half.  Hamadou Laminou followed with 15 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks.

Earlier, Nazareth School-NU set the stage for a double celebration by holding off the late rally of La Salle Green Hills, 73-70, to kick off hostilities in Group A of the Juniors Division.  Winderlich Coyoca led the Bullpups with 15 points and seven rebounds followed by Paul Manalang with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.
