FilOil: Ateneo d. UST, 89-72

2017 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup     SAN JUAN City – Ateneo de Manila University ended its two-game losing skid by whipping University of Santo Tomas, 89-72, in the main game of the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Friday night (May 5) at the FilOil Flying V Centre.  It was a welcome development for the squad that is coming off two one-point defeats at the hands of Lyceum of the Philippines University and University of the East.

“We just paid more attention to the details today,” said Coach Tab Baldwin.  “More than the results, we are looking at how the team plays because our system is a little immature right now.”

The Blue Eagles really went all out to end their misery with Mike Nieto leading the opening charge along with fellow starter Raffy Verano and substitute Dan Wong as they took the first period, 29-14, and never looked back.  It was all Ateneo from there with big men Isaac Go and Chibueze Ikeh outplaying UST’s new recruit Steve Akomo.

Nieto led all scorers with 15 points in only 16 minutes of action.  Go was next with 10 points and four rebounds.

Jordan Sta. Ana topped the Growling Tigers with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists before exiting the game late in the fourth period with an injury.  Jeepy Faundo followed with 10 points and four rebounds.
