SAN JUAN City – University of the East drew super numbers from Alvin Pasaol to turn back Ateneo de Manila University, 72-71, at the 11th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena Wednesday evening (May 3). In the end, defense saved the day for the Warriors as they prevented the Blue Eagles from converting in the last possession.
Rookie Mark Maloles sank a running shot with 36 seconds left to put UE on top, 72-71. An ADMU turnover forced them to foul Pasaol but the burly forward from Davao missed both his free throws thus giving the Blue Eagles a chance to steal the game.
However, Tyler Tio and Chibueze Ikeh missed point blank attempts and the buzzer sounding for the Blue Eagles’ second straight one-point defeat. Lyceum of the Philippines University inflicted ADMU’s first loss last Monday, 90-89.
“I thought I would get in trouble with Coach (Frederick Pumeren) after I missed both free throws,” said Pasaol who starred all game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Maloles followed with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Mike Nieto led the way for the Blue Eagles with 15 points and eight rebounds. Ikeh was next with eight points and seven rebounds.
