PASIG CITY – Domark Matillano hit a triple at the buzzer to lift Philippine Merchant Marine School over Technological Institute of the Philippines, 88-85, at the resumption of the Rain Or Shine Sumilang Invitational Tournament at the Sumilang Covered Court Monday (April 24). The Mariners thus ended the elimination phase with a 3-1 win-loss card for the second seed in Group A while the Engineers bade goodbye after dropping all their four games.
TIP still gave it a tough fight as they rallied from seven points down in the fourth period, 70-77, finally equalizing on a stab from Jopet Soriano with 45 seconds left, 83-83. Rocky Antonares then restored the lead to PMMS by tipping in Matillano’s missed triple but Guilber Carurucan immediately tied the game for the last time with a drive, 85-85, with five ticks remaining and Coach Aldrin Morante calling a timeout to map up the winning play.
Matillano connected from all angles to tally 31 points on five out of 16 shooting from the three-point line. Antonares was a force underneath with nine of his 16 points coming in the fourth period to go with 11 rebounds.
Soriano paced the Engineers with 16 points and eight rebounds. He was backed up by Carurucan and John Matthew Manalang with 13 markers each.
