ROS Sumilang Invitational: DOMC d. MLQU, 75-71

NAASCU on Facebook     PASIG CITY – De Ocampo Memorial College avoided any complications in the standings by fending off the challenge of Manuel L. Quezon University, 75-71, in the nightcap of the Rain Or Shine Sumilang Invitational Tournament Saturday night (April 22) at the Sumilang Covered Court.  The winning Cobras thus set a showdown with Our Lady of Fatima University this Monday (April 24) for the second seed in Group B.

Continuing to miss their star players, Coach Toto Dojillo banked on splendid fourth period performances from his shock troopers Tryrone de la Cruz and Junar Wenceslao to hack out the victory, their second in three outings.  Trailing by five entering the last two minutes, 66-71, Jhonard Clarito started their comeback with a quick basket, 68-71, and de la Cruz and Wenceslao finished the job.

De la Cruz scored a field goal and was fouled in the process but failed to complete the three-point play.  However, the ball found its way back to the Cobras with Wenceslao eventually completing a three-point play off Allen King de la Cruz and restore the lead to DOMC for good with 1:47 remaining, 73-71.

Wenceslao then added another free throw for more cushion, 74-71, as the Stallions failed to score from thereon.  De la Cruz then put the finishing touches with one free throw but missed his second with Peter Marc Manalang collaring the offensive rebound and dribbling the final 16 seconds away.

Clarito led all scorers with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals followed by Igi Boy Sabasaje with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Game heroes de la Cruz and Wenceslao also tallied double figures with 10 markers each.

Nikko Lao and Alvin Detubio paced MLQU with 13 points apiece.  The Stallions finished their elimination campaign at 1-3 and will play Group A top seed Philippine Christian University (3-0) in the knockout quarterfinals on Tuesday (April 25).

The tournament takes a rest day on Sunday (April 23), the feast day of Santa Rosa de Lima Parish patroness Saint Rose of Lima, and will resume with the final elimination round games on Monday (April 24).  The tournament was organized by sportsman Buddy Encarnado as part of the festivities to mark her 400th death anniversary this year.
