ROS Sumilang Invitational: PMMS d. Saint Clare, 73-59

NAASCU on Facebook     PASIG CITY – Philippine Merchant Marine School snared a very important win at the Rain Or Shine Sumilang Invitational Tournament by sinking no less than reigning NAASCU champion Saint Clare College of Caloocan, 73-59, in the penultimate day of the elimination round Saturday (April 22) at the Sumilang Covered Court.  The result threw a monkey wrench into the Group A standings and assured the Mariners of the second seed entering the playoffs next week.

The Saints started flat and they paid dearly for it allowing their opponents to break the game’s only deadlock at 2-2 with an 11-0 run.  The Mariners never looked back as they handily took the first period, 22-12, with big men Rocky Antonares and Scott Mboe pounding the inside.

Saint Clare showed signs of life by scoring nine unanswered points to threaten early in the second canto, 24-25, but PMMS had a ready answer.  Antonares combined well with rookie guard Aaron Morante to keep PMMS ahead at halftime, 34-29.

Antonares saved the best for the last period as he added 11 more to finish with a game-high 23 points and five rebounds.  Morante, son of PMMS coach Aldrin Morante, had a breakout game of 13 points and three assists while Domark Matillano was his usual prolific self with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Michael de Leon paced the Saints with 12 points and two steals followed by Russel Fuentes with 10 as the entire team struggled.  Saint Clare dropped its second straight game and completed its elimination round schedule with an even 2-2 win-loss card good for the third seed.
