PARANAQUE CITY – De Ocampo Memorial College claimed Game One of the best-of-three semifinal series of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Seniors Basketball tournament with a one-point squeaker over PATTS College of Aeronautics, 102-101, at the Olivarez College Coliseum Monday morning (March 20). The Cobras leaned anew on impressive fourth period performances from guard Dahrrel Caranguian and forward Jhonard Clarito to put away the Seahorses.
Well in control of the contest since the first period, DOMC went for the knockout punch with Caranguian and Clarito scoring all of their points in the fourth period. However, PATTS furiously rallied with forward Jayson Orada leading the charge with 10 points capped by two free throws that put them within a point at the 26-second mark, 99-100.
Not yet in the penalty, the Seahorses were forced to give up three consecutive fouls to stall the Cobras’ offense and eventually sending Caranguian to the free throw line with five ticks remaining, calmly making both gift shots for more breathing space, 102-99. PATTS then fired away attempting to tie the game with a triple but to no avail as team captain Amiel Pimentel settled the final tally with a layup at the buzzer.
Caranguian hit a total of 30 markers to pace the Cobras, 13 of those coming in the fourth. Clarito hit 10 points in the fourth to finish with 20 points while Redel Fabro chipped in 15 as the Cobras remained undefeated in the tournament.
PATTS team leader John Paul Manansala started hot with 11 points in the opening period but his game suddenly went missing in the latter stages but still led his side with 26. Orada was next with 23 followed by Arvee Capinding with 15 and Josha Diaz with 16.
Game Two is set for Wednesday (March 22) again at Olivarez. Tipoff is at 10:00 AM.
